TOKLA students are active learners. They learn by doing. While some traditional classroom instruction is indispensable, our classrooms are rarely arranged with rows of desks facing the front of the classroom. We don’t lecture and expect students to passively integrate information. We teach small groups in a variety of models, based on student need. Many of our courses integrate hands-on work and academics, especially math and language arts. We often take learning outside the classroom, giving students the context and relevance to develop knowledge, skills, discipline and values. We want students to wonder, ask and engage in their surroundings. We want them to take initiative, make decisions, learn from mistakes and be accountable.
